Three A's for AFSO
March 14, 2024
So much happening!
Let's try to pare it down to three A's at AFSO this month—Academic credit, April 21, and Appreciative inquiry.
A is for Academic credit: As we mentioned last month, ten of our students are taking courses to earn academic credit at the Open Society University Network. They are finding the courses both challenging and thrilling. As one student put it, "There are students there from every other culture. This is the world we are entering. I want to engage with it." Now, six of the courses we will be teaching this summer and fall will also be eligible for OSUN credit, affording more of our students more opportunities to build their transcript as they begin the long journey toward completing their education and fulfilling their dreams.
A is for April 21! –when we will celebrate AFSO's first year and give volunteers, friends, and friends of friends a glimpse of what we have been doing to transform our students' lives. We'll feature our amazing students, our ingenious professors, and some of the great work that's been produced over the last three semesters. If you didn't receive a Save the Date announcement, please drop a note to info@afsousa.org to be sure to receive the Zoom invitation.
A is for Appreciative Inquiry, the method we'll be following as we launch our strategic planning process over the next few months. As circumstances change on the ground in Afghanistan and elsewhere, AFSO as an organization needs to remain both sure of its mission and nimble in its execution. We'll be talking to all our stakeholders—students, donors, partners, volunteers—to mold and refine "Pathways to Empowerment: Transforming Education for Afghan Women." We'll identify what's working, envision what might be, determine what should be, and create what will be. Hats off to our new volunteer, Maureen McLaughlin, and our Executive Director, Amran Fatih, for spearheading this process.
And we appreciate all of you for everything you are doing! You can always hit the donate button if you are so inclined; every penny goes toward saving, lifting, and empowering women's lives through education.
Sending happy spring thoughts,
